Let’s start from the beginning— your first poem in first grade! How did that moment shape your love for writing?
I was a very shy kid! I didn’t really talk. I was always the outcast, and being noticed by a teacher truly made me feel seen and heard, and receiving such positive feedback helped me so much in my confidence.
You describe yourself as a “spooky mom with a spooky kid”—how does being a parent influence your writing?
Being a mom has toned me down tremendously. I’ve always been really extra but now that I’m a mom, I’ve toned it down in a modest way where I can enjoy it as well with my son.
Your child, Ace, also writes spooky stories! Do you two ever collaborate or share ideas? What’s it like having a fellow writer in the family?
Yes! Sometimes at dinner we tell each other spooky stories. I started writing down Ace‘s stories and was going to start a children’s book series called The Adventures of Ace! All the stories are original from him and he helped guide the whole thing.
You’ve been writing your whole life—what keeps you inspired after all these years? Trauma, I’ve been through so much in my life and being handicap myself my health is always keeping me on my toes. A lot of these stories are inspired by daydreaming, nightmares I’ve had or just my imagination!
What’s your writing process like? Are you a disciplined daily writer or do you follow inspiration when it strikes?
I wish I could write for 30 minutes every day. I’m sure it would help me tremendously. But I write whenever I get a chance. Sometimes I’ll just jot stuff down in my phone because I’m normally on the go with my son or with work.
Your book "Modern Mysteries" has a really intriguing title. Can you tell us what inspired this collection and what themes it explores?
I wanted something more up-to-date, not just the typical rules to horror. I want to incorporate LBGTQ friendly stories as well as stories that have handicap characters. That’s more real that’s more true to me. I’m bisexual and handicapped, why not scare myself some more!
Which part of "Modern Mysteries" is closest to your heart, and why?
It was my first short story book I ever got to publish! I have several books that I would like to publish, but maybe one day!
What's your goal in life you want to achieve next?
I just want to live a happy, healthy life with my son and husband! I would like to be able to write whenever I want, having the flexibility, and freedom to do the things in life that make me happy!
Your favourite book?
Growing up my favorite book was by Stephen King Rose Red. Still to this day one of my favorite movies!
What advice would you give to a young or emerging writer?
Write outside the norm! Forget what people think writing should be like. Write what you feel, and how things appear in your mind. Not everyone will like what you do, so do it for yourself.
